How to use the Christmas countdown

The clock counts down to the first second of December 25 in your time zone. The page reads the zone from your device, so a visitor in Buffalo and one in Sydney each see their own midnight arrive. Pick another place in the time zone box to see its Christmas instead. It works as a countdown calculator too: the same time left appears as total hours, minutes and seconds, as weeks and days, and as workdays.

The tree has 52 lights, one for each week since last Christmas began. A light comes on at the end of its week, and the line under the tree says when the next one will. When Christmas begins the star lights, the page celebrates, and a bell rings if you turned sound on.

Around the world shows when Christmas starts in 18 places. Any date counts down to Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, Orthodox Christmas, or a date and time you type.

How the countdown is figured

time left = start of December 25 in your time zone − the time right now
days = whole days in the seconds left; hours, minutes and seconds are what is left over

Here is a worked example. At 2:21 PM Eastern on October 30, 2026, Christmas starts at midnight Eastern on December 25. In winter Eastern time is five hours behind UTC, so that moment is 5:00 AM UTC. From now to then is 55 days, 10 hours, 39 minutes and 0 seconds, or 4,790,340 seconds in all. Divide by 86,400 for the days, and the hours, minutes and seconds come from what remains.

The seconds round up. A clock that rounds down would read 00:00:00 for the last second before Christmas, so this one shows zero only once Christmas has begun. The time zone information comes from your browser's built-in time zone data, so the clock follows the rules your device follows, including daylight saving time.

Days on the calendar and days on the clock

The page shows two day counts, and they can differ by one. The clock count is whole 24-hour days, with the leftover hours beside it. The calendar count is the number of midnights ahead of you. In the example the clock says 55 days and 10 hours, while the calendar says 56 days, because 56 midnights lie between today and Christmas morning. Children's countdowns use the calendar count and call the days sleeps.

The page subtracts real moments, not clock readings, so it stays correct when your clocks change. In most of the US the clocks go back an hour on November 1, 2026, so that day lasts 25 hours, and the countdown still drops one second every second through it.

The tiles also count workdays (Monday through Friday) and weekend days from tomorrow through Christmas Eve: 39 workdays and 16 weekend days in the example. Holidays are not taken out, because workplaces differ.

Where Christmas starts first

Christmas begins at midnight, so it reaches the world one time zone at a time. The earliest clock on Earth is UTC+14, used on Kiritimati, also called Christmas Island, in the Line Islands of Kiribati. The latest is UTC−12, which covers Baker Island and Howland Island, where nobody lives. The Around the world tab lists 18 places in order. In 2026 the first and the last are 26 hours apart, so for 26 hours somewhere on Earth it is Christmas Day.

Which Christmas

US law sets Christmas Day on December 25, and so do most countries. Many Orthodox churches keep December 25 on the older Julian calendar, which is 13 days behind the one most of the world uses. On our calendars that day falls on January 7. For that date, choose Orthodox Christmas on the Any date tab. The page uses January 7 for every year it covers, which is right from 1901 through 2100.

Thanksgiving to Christmas

US law puts Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November (5 U.S.C. § 6103). That means it falls between November 22 and 28, and the gap to Christmas is always 27 to 33 days. In 2026 Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 29 days before Christmas.

Where the numbers come from

Everything here is date arithmetic. Time zone rules come from your browser, and the holiday dates come from the law and calendar rules named above. The page uses no prices. The math was checked against a second, separately written program on tens of thousands of random dates and time zones, and on edge moments such as one millisecond before Christmas and the hours when clocks change.

Uses and tips

  • Counting sleeps with a child, working back to a shopping or travel plan, or showing a class or family chat how long is left. For shipping, use the carrier's own cutoff dates; this page does not know them.
  • If the time looks wrong by hours, your device's time zone is probably wrong. Pick the right place in the time zone box.
  • On December 24 the clock shows 0 days and some hours while the calendar count says 1. Both are right.
  • A workday count is not a shopping-day count. Stores and carriers keep their own calendars.

Questions

How many days until Christmas?

Read the big number on the clock, or the calendar days tile. The clock shows whole 24-hour days plus the hours left, and the calendar tile counts midnights. Both change with the date you open the page.

Why does the clock say 55 days when the calendar says 56?

The clock counts whole days from this moment. The calendar counts dates. With 10 hours and 39 minutes left over after 55 full days, the next midnight still counts as one more.

When does Christmas start in Australia or New Zealand?

Before most of the world. Open the Around the world tab to see the time in your own zone for Auckland, Sydney and 16 other places.

Can I count down to Orthodox Christmas?

Yes. Choose Orthodox Christmas on the Any date tab. It counts down to January 7.

Is my time zone sent anywhere?

No. The countdown runs in your browser, and the page reads your time zone only to find your midnight. If you press Share on Facebook or copy the link, the page saves the day count, the holiday and the year for 90 days so the link can show them. Nothing you type is saved.
